Howzat! Junior cricket club swaps sugary drinks for water at prizegiving

Following the 2015/2016 cricket season, Brooklyn Junior Cricket Club swapped the usual sugary drinks for water at the club's end of season prize giving.

Using the Healthy Futures Water Kit, the club's cricketers and their families got to choose from three cheeky water flavours: orange and tangelo (aka the Kane Williamson Punch...to the boundary), iced water (aka the Brendon McCullum Clean...catch taken at slip) or apple and cinnamon sticks (aka The Trent Boult Smash... through mid wicket). The compostable cups were numbered and used to award spot prizes cricket gear and water bottles.

Comments from the club and parents included:

"It was great that there was a variety of waters on offer. Because kids weren’t told it was a healthy 'alternative' to the fizzy cans that would usually be provided...it normalised water being served and that it can be tasty and fun!"

“It was such a hot day, most players came back for two or three refills, trying different flavours out.”

"The prize giving was the biggest the club has ever had in terms of number of teams, yet also the most orderly and well behaved. It has made us wonder if serving water instead of fizzy drinks was one of the main reasons for that."

Fun, happy, hydrated families, minimal waste and lasting treats Howzat for a club that shows all round commitment!
