Jim Lindsay MPhil, BSc (Hons), Dip Teach, MInstD, Chair
Jim is an experienced executive who has worked in telecommunications. government and the health sector. He is a member of the NZ Institute of Directors and brings management and board experience to the Trust. Jim is currently Chief Executive of Tracecare Ltd a company that specialises in mobile health and safety systems. Jim also works across the health sector in professional regulation.
Tess Clarke RN, BN, Educator and Executive Officer
Tess is a Diabetes Clinical Nurse Specialist at Capital and Coast DHB. She is passionate about raising awareness of issues relating to type 2 diabetes and its prevention. One of the founding Trustees, Tess was the 2013 winner of the Ellen Dougherty Award for Excellence in Nursing and in 2014 was selected as a finalist in the Westpac Women of Influence Awards in recognition of her work in this area.
Vito Lo Iacono, General Manager
Vito is passionate about making a positive difference. He has been top executive and director of both public and private sectors entities, leading projects aiming at improving organisations’ visibility and generating economic returns. As General Manager at Healthy Futures, Vito ensures smooth running of the Trust, alignment to its values and aims, as well as ensuring its long-term sustainability.
Dr Moira Smith BDS, PhD, PGDipSci, DPH, Board member
Moira is Deputy-Director and Senior Research Fellow in the Health Promotion and Policy Research Unit, Department of Public Health, University of Otago, Wellington. Moira is a registered dentist and public health researcher with interests in child health, oral health, children’s rights, children’s food environments and public health nutrition and health promotion. Moira's PhD examined whether the sport-related food environment supports children's right to health. Moira is a founding Trustee of Healthy Futures.
Emma Hickson MN (Applied) RN, RM, Board member
Emma is the Director of Nursing for Primary and Integrated Care at Capital and Coast DHB. She has qualifications in District Nursing, education and prescribing and has completed research for the Ministry of Health. Emma's focus remains on how nursing and other professionals can empower people and communities to improve their health.
Dr Nikki Blair, General and Community Paediatrician, Board member
Dr Nikki Blair is a General and Community Consultant Paediatrician at Wellington Hospital. Nikki’s interest in childhood obesity is reflected in her publications on the issue and its clinical management. Nikki looks forward to supporting child obesity prevention strategies in her role as Trustee with Healthy Futures.
Simon Shepherd, C.A., B.Comm, M. App Fin., Treasurer
Simon is a Chartered Accountant who works at BNZ in their Financial Markets division. He has an interest in nutrition and healthy eating as a result of being an average weekend endurance athlete. Simon sees being part of Healthy Futures as a way of giving something to a very worthwhile cause. He is married with two teenage children.
Kirsty Newton RN, BN, MPHC, Educator and Social Media Contributor
Kirsty is a diabetes nurse working with young people with diabetes in Capital and Coast DHB. She is alarmed at the growing number of young people being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. She is keen to make prevention a priority and raise awareness about obesity and type 2 diabetes particularly in children and teens. She is a founding Trustee of Healthy Futures.
Miranda Walker RN, MPhil (Nursing), Educator and Programme Manager
Miranda is a Diabetes Clinical Nurse Specialist at Capital and Coast DHB. She has previously worked with people who need dialysis or organ transplant because of kidney disease, and saw the alarming increase in the number of people developing kidney disease due to diabetes. Her Masters’ research looked at prevention of diabetic kidney disease, and she is committed to finding ways to prevent diabetes in our communities.
Dr Amber Parry-Strong, MSc, PGDipDiet, PhD, Dietitian and Diabetes Research Fellow
Amber is a NZ registered Dietitian and a Research Fellow in the Endocrine, Diabetes and Research Centre at Capital and Coast DHB. She is involved in many areas of diabetes research that include dietary factors – such as treatment, education and prevention. Amber is passionate about helping people find good health through good food.
Chris Te’o, Pacific Health Advisor
Chris has almost 10 years' work experience in the Pacific, having worked for the international unit of the New Zealand Family Planning Association and for the Secretariat of the South Pacific, based in Noumea. Following the loss of his father to cancer in 2009, Chris began the USO Bike Ride to promote better health and well-being for Polynesian people in Aotearoa and the Pacific through cycling. Chris is based in Wellington and is currently working for the Cancer Society as a Health Promotion Coordinator.
Sera Tapu-Taala, MN (Clinical), BN, RN, Educator and Pacific Health Advisor
Sera has over 16 years nursing experience and has worked as a diabetes nurse for the last 11 years. She is an Accredited Diabetes Nurse Specialist and completed her Masters’ degree in 2011 with a thesis that focused on the experiences of Samoan people with type 2 diabetes and their transition to insulin therapy.
The wellness and health of Pasefika people has always been at the forefront of Sera's nursing practise. Sera was born and raised in Samoa, where she was fortunate to be embraced by her culture and language. These significant fundamentals have formed the basis of her commitment and duty to the Pasefika community and most importantly to her four children.
Kathryn Park, BC (Bachelor of Communication), PGDipBus., Fundraising Coordinator
Kathryn works in Projects in the public sector, with a background in communications, marketing, event management and customer service. Outside of work she has been studying a Diploma of Health Science by distance at Massey University, stemming from her own health experiences and an interest in nutrition for general health and well-being. Working with Healthy Futures gives her the opportunity to contribute to her community and influence their perspectives around food and physical activity.
Jo Macdonald, Garden To Table Schools Co-ordinator
By day Jo works as a recruitment consultant for the advertising and marketing sector and has previously worked in account management roles for ad agencies in Wellington and Ireland. She has always held an interest in the benefits of healthy living, and now with two young daughters, eating well and keeping active has become an important focus.
Through her work with Healthy Futures she hopes to give back to the community. She aims to support our young people to be active and to make healthy food choices, enabling them to have happy, bright and healthy futures.
Dr. Laura Ichim BDS(Distinction), FRACDS(GDP) Dental Surgeon, Wai Water Manager
Laura is a Dentist and a passionate change maker. She has been practicing Dentistry for 8 years in Wellington and spreads her time between private practice and the public sector, as a part-time Community Dentist for Bee Healthy Regional Dental Services. She is incredibly passionate about the importance of oral health as part of general health and especially around making drinking water free, easily accessible and available to all members of our communities.
Laura is also committed to volunteering and also holds roles with the NZDA Wellington Branch committee , the DCM Free Dental Clinic and the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons Regional Committee. She is also a proud supporter of One Percent Collective, founded by her partner Pat, who is the talented photographer responsible for the professional images on Healthy Futures’ website.
Ma’u Pauta, MN (Clinical), BN, RN, Board Member
Ma’u Pauta has 9 years experience working as Practice Nurse at Porirua Union & Community Health Service (PUCHS) in Cannons Creek, Porirua. She has a Master of Nursing (Clinical) from Massey University. Her thesis focused on pre-diabetes - a major issue in the predominantly Maori and Pacific PUCHS population.
Ma’u was born in Tonga and is fluent in both Tongan and English. She is committed to making a difference to the health outcomes of people in the Pacific community through her work as a Diabetes Nurse and her involvement in Healthy Futures.
Julie Cederman, BLMSc, Consultant
Julie has a Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science (Otago) and began her career as a medical laboratory scientist at Canterbury Health Laboratories. Since then she has worked in laboratories, project management and customer service management roles.
Julie has brought her health background combined with her broad work skills and strong community links to Healthy Futures, to support improvements to the health and wellbeing of New Zealand children.
Dr Anna Ferguson BDS, Consultant
Anna is a Dentist with 13 years of clinical experience in the hospital and community dental settings of New Zealand and the United Kingdom. She has also worked in diabetes research and has studied human nutrition.
Anna is passionate about ensuring the healthy choice is the easy choice, especially in environments where children, teenagers and families operate. Anna's focus this year is ensuring water is the easily accessible drink choice for Wellington children and their families.
